Sugar Cookie Recipe

One word for these cookies - yummy!  I have used this sugar cookie recipe for the last 20 years (wow, I feel old!) and is always a hit...especially with the kids.

Trim the Tree Cookies
Cookie:
2 ½ cups flour
1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
1 cup softened butter
1 egg
1 tsp. baking soda
1 tsp. cream of tartar
1 tsp. almond extract
Frosting:
4 cups powdered sugar
½ cup softened butter
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 to 4 tablespoons milk

1. Combine all cookie ingredients in large mixer bowl. Beat at medium speed, scraping bowl often, until well mixed (3 to 4 minutes).

2. Heat oven to 375°. Roll out dough on well floured surface, one-half at a time to 1/4 inch thickness. Cut with 2 to 3 inch cookie cutters. Place 1 inch apart onto ungreased cookie sheets. Bake for 6 to 10 minutes or until edges are lightly browned.

3. Combine powdered sugar, ½ cup butter and vanilla in small mixer bowl. Beat at low speed, gradually adding enough milk for desired consistency. Separate into various bowls and add food coloring.

4. Decorate cookies as desired.
